Lexington, Va.—Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corporation, will receive the 2010 George C. Marshall Foundation Award following a luncheon Nov. 16 at American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The Marshall Foundation will honor Mr. Smith for his success in building a company that has changed business around the world and for the generous use of FedEx resources to provide humanitarian assistance to countries and regions in need.
The Marshall Foundation Award recognizes Mr. Smith’s integrity, commitment to mission and visionary leadership in the example of George C. Marshall, who, like Mr. Smith, transformed his world.
The Marshall Foundation also recognizes the many efforts of FedEx to alleviate hunger and hopelessness following natural disasters such as the recent earthquake in Haiti or the tsunami in Indonesia by using company planes, air crews and other resources following the example of the Marshall Plan that assisted European countries devastated by conflict in rebuilding their nations and economies after World War II.
Past recipients of the Marshall Foundation Award have included Robert Gates, current Secretary of Defense; former President George H. W. Bush, General Colin Powell, USA (Ret.) and David Rockefeller, among others.
Smith is responsible for providing strategic direction for FedEx Corporation. More than 285,000 FedEx team members worldwide deliver more than eight million shipments each business day to 220 countries and territories around the globe.
FedEx has consistently been ranked on FORTUNE magazine’s industry lists, including “World’s Most Admired Companies,” “100 Best Companies to Work For” and is on FORTUNE’s “Blue Ribbon Companies List."
Smith has served on the boards of several large public companies and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Mayo Foundation Boards. He was formerly chairman of the Board of Governors for the International Air Transport Association and the U.S. Air Transport Association. Smith is a member of the Business Roundtable, is a board member for the Council on Foreign Relations and is co-chairman of the Energy Security Leadership Council. He has served as chairman of the U.S.-China Business Council and is the current chairman of the French-American Business Council.
Smith received the Circle of Honor Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, the Marine for Life Award from the United States Marine Corps, and the UCLA Anderson School of Management’s John Wooden Global Leadership Award. He is a member of the Aviation Hall of Fame.
Born in 1944 in Marks, Miss., Smith attended Yale University, where he earned a B.A. in 1966. Smith served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-1970.
