Journal of Commerce--The Cass Freight Index for U.S. shipments fell 3.6 percent in December from the month before to its lowest point since May as a yearlong shipping recovery sputtered out at the end of the year.

The closely watched measure of domestic shipping demand grew 14.1 percent over the same month the year before, when the U.S. economy was still dragging near its recession lows.
