Fresno, CA – JTS (Johanson Transportation Service), a leading third-party supply chain solutions provider, is celebrating their 40th year in business today.

In July of 1971 founder Richard Johanson left the security of the California Trucking Exchange where he began his brokerage career in 1953. He left because of disagreements with the owner over business practices, and, despite having very little means, he believed he could begin a truck brokerage company based upon ethical principles and standards.

Anchoring the foundation of the company were four founding principles: Experience, Integrity, Gratitude, and Respect. Within months it was apparent the company would survive, and Richard hosted his first Thanksgiving Party in November of 1971 to show his gratitude to his clients. The appreciation party has been held every year since then in Fresno, California – the city in which JTS’ corporate headquarters are located. 

Since its inception, JTS has grown tremendously. Richard’s son, Larry Johanson, started with JTS in 1972 and by 1975 was appointed to start the company’s Perishable division, expanding the company’s freight base from dry food commodities into fresh produce and food products. When Richard retired in 1989, Larry took the reins as President.

The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 deregulated the trucking industry and brokers were allowed to obtain authority. JTS acquired its property broker’s authority in July 1982 which allowed JTS to contract non-exempt regulated freight. Since then JTS has continuously expanded its solutions and launched a new Logistics division in 2002, a Dairy division in 2005, an International division in 2006, a Rail/Intermodal division in 2008 and the Logistics division added Temperature-controlled LTL solutions in 2009. JTS has also focused on state-of-the-art technology systems to set them apart in the industry, including JTS Interactive Services and most recently a Transportation Management System.
