November 1st was a day of celebration at the DHL hub in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG), as DHL executives, employees and community and business leaders took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating the completion of the $22 million hub expansion.

Built on 19 acres, the newly-expanded CVG hub included widening of the existing parking apron to allow for nine additional wide-body aircrafts and nine new aircraft gates.

But the celebration wasn’t just about a freshly paved, expanded tarmac, or a new hydrant jet refueling system. It signaled a bright future for CVG employees; continued strong growth for DHL and a bright spot in an otherwise clouded atmosphere of high U.S. unemployment and an uncertain economy.

“DHL is a strong airport and community partner, and its continued growth means jobs for this airport and for this region. We here at CVG are committed to help DHL grow their business,” stated Tim Zeis, Chief Operating Officer at the CVG airport. Tim was one of several public officials at the ceremony that recognized DHL not just as an important part of the region, but for overall international trade and helping U.S. companies reach the global marketplace.

Travis Cobb, Vice President of DHL Americas Hubs, Network Control and Gateways, opened the ceremonies as well as welcomed local community leaders and invited guests.

Cobb stressed that the DHL expansion at CVG would improve hub operations and capacity, as well as help expand DHL’s reach into Asia, Europe and the Americas. A new direct flight between the CVG Hub and the DHL Latin America Hub in Panama City now serves as the daily linkage between DHL’s North America and Central America air networks. DHL also recently announced it will be adding three Southern Air 777 freighters that will expand DHL’s capacity and boost transit times along key growing trade lanes between the Americas, Asia and the Middle East. The first 777 started its operation in August and is now connecting DHL hubs in Bahrain, Hong Kong and CVG on a daily basis.

Since DHL returned to CVG in 2009, air freight at CVG has increased by 190 percent, according to a recent regional freight study*. Seventy eight DHL flights per day operate to and from the CVG hub. These flights connect shipments to points across the U.S. as well as across the globe with direct flights to cities in Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada and Central America. “More expansions are still planned here at CVG as we continue to grow our International shipment volumes and expand our Air Network coverage and capabilities,” said Cobb.

Mike Munn, VP of Human Resources for DHL Express, spoke proudly about DHL community involvement and commitment both locally and throughout the world. “Everything we do here begins with caring employees and their generosity and community spirit, not with some corporate mandate,” said Munn. “I think that is really great and makes us unique.”

Travis Cobb invited DHL Executives and community members to join him in the ribbon-cutting to officially open the new South Apron expansion at the CVG hub.
