STAMFORD, Conn., May 24, 2010 – Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE:PBI) today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, among other local and state officials, to commemorate the opening of its new mail services facility in Newark, New Jersey. The site, which will serve as a new International Mail Distribution Center, will process approximately 50 million pieces of international mail per year, expanding the company’s mail services operations in New Jersey. The new facility will bring 180 jobs to Newark and the company expects to create an additional 25 jobs at its Newark site during the next few years.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Pitney Bowes and guests will join customers to explore the new space. Located in Newark’s Enterprise Zone at 158 Mt. Olivet Avenue, the new Pitney Bowes mail services facility includes approximately 76,000 square feet of space.
“Pitney Bowes would like to extend our thanks to city and state officials for helping to make it possible for us to open the doors to our new facility in Newark, and keep and grow jobs in New Jersey,” said John Ward, president, Pitney Bowes Global Mail Services. “We are honored to join the city of Newark as a new member of the local business community and look forward to a long and successful relationship.”
The new Pitney Bowes facility is located in Newark’s UEZ, one of 32 zones in New Jersey that the state has designated with specific incentives to revitalize urban communities and encourage business investment. Pitney Bowes signed a First Source agreement with the City of Newark and Newark’s Brick City Development Corporation (BCDC) that commits the company to make a good faith effort to recruit and hire qualified residents of Newark who apply for positions at the facility through Pitney Bowes’s online job application process.
“I am pleased that Pitney Bowes is the latest world-class company to choose Newark,” said Mayor Booker. “By opening a major international mail services facility in the South Ward, Pitney Bowes is building on Newark’s emerging leadership in the logistics industry. I thank the leadership of Pitney Bowes for committing to a First Source Agreement which will prioritize the hiring of Newark residents for job opportunities. Even in this difficult climate, businesses are choosing Newark and are discovering all that our City has to offer.”
“Pitney Bowes has been both an innovation leader and a household name in New Jersey,” said Lieutenant Governor Guadagno. “Governor Christie and I are working everyday to make New Jersey a home for growth that can work with companies like Pitney Bowes to create jobs in the state. As we do this, I look forward to celebrating even more success stories like Pitney Bowes.”
