Michael Sawitz, CEO of AIM Mail Centers, a national retail chain of franchised business solution centers, has been elected to serve as president of the National Alliance of Retail Ship Centers (NARSC), a California-registered non-profit association. The mission of the alliance is to be a voice for the retail ship center industry, including work with government agencies involved in policy making. There are currently more than 15,000 ship centers in the United States.
“Retail shipping is a multi-billion-dollar segment of the American economy and serves very large numbers of businesses and individuals every day,” said Sawitz. “As AIM Mail Centers celebrates its 25th anniversary, I am very proud to have been selected to lead this prestigious organization. And to have an opportunity to help ensure that this industry continues to deliver the highest levels of quality and service.”
The NARSC has been involved with the comment process for various proposed changes to the Domestic Mail Manual and the operations of the United States Postal Service. Additionally, the group was in Washington, DC, recently for a Department of Transportation hearing concerning the shipping of lithium batteries. An upcoming visit to the Capital will entail meetings with the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security to discuss the industry’s role in safeguarding the public from acts of terrorism via small parcel shipments.
NARSC membership is composed of independent and franchised parcel centers, vendors, carriers and chain store operations. AIM Mail Centers has been an NARSC member since its inception 2008.
Sawitz is also an active member of SCORE, including the CEO Forum of the organization’s Orange County office. SCORE is America's premier source of free and confidential small business advice for entrepreneurs provided by 12,400 volunteer counselors who share their wisdom and lessons learned in business. The organization is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and has helped some 8.5 million small businesses through 364 offices around the country.
In addition, Sawitz has been a member of the International Franchise Association’s CEO Forum for nine years, including participation in the initial prototype and development of the forum.
AIM Mail Centers around the country support local business communities by providing a wide range of business services including ground and express shipping from all carriers, postal services, freight services, packing, storage and moving supplies, full-color printing, document imaging, electronic document and image transfer, advertising specialties, private mailbox services with eAlerts, and productivity tools and business services.
The company is a 20-year member of the Plastic Loose Fill Council, whose mission includes “recovery, reuse and recycling of polystyrene loose fill, commonly known as ‘packing peanuts’." The council estimates that close to 45 million pounds of plastic loose fill are produced each year in this country and 30% is reused. Through the council’s national reuse program, member businesses like AIM Mail Centers far exceed that national figure and use, on average, 50% reused loose fill in their outbound shipments. All local AIM Mail Centers stores serve their communities as recycling points for reuse of these materials, with a significant positive impact on the environment.
In addition, the company has maintained a 10-year relationship with non-profit organizations that provide training and work experience at AIM Mail Centers stores for individuals with disabilities. These organizations currently support more than 1,000 of these individuals in need per year. Sawitz is an active proponent of support and funding for these kinds of vital services. He has advocated on their behalf with local businesses and elected officials.
