Norfolk Southern Railway’s second quarter net income surged 59 percent to $392 million, while revenue rose 31 percent from a year earlier to $2.43 billion, the Journal of Commerce reported.

    NS, one of the four largest U.S. railroads and one of two major rail networks in the eastern half, saw its profit margin improve to 16.1 percent of revenue in the latest quarter from 13.3 percent of sales in the 2009 period.
