Moving mail and moving it quickly and efficiently has been the ongoing goal of the U. S. Postal Service. In an effort to achieve this goal, the USPS wanted to upgrade existing central plant command rooms in Bulk Mail Centers (BMCs) with state-of-the-art command centers so that entire facilities could be monitored and managed. Motion Systems has partnered with the USPS to meet this goal by installing the Central Plant Operating Control System (CPOCS), which provides the latest proven technology for optimizing plant productivity.
Motion Systems, with locations in Phoenix, Grand Prairie, TX and White Lake, WI, was awarded the contract by the USPS to design a standardized, state-of-the-art Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) control system that could be retrofitted into the existing national network of BMCs. CPOCS provides a complete PLC upgrade for mechanized equipment including roughly 400 separate bulk conveyors, traveling and pivoting deflectors, container loaders and sack shakeout units for the USPS network of aged BMCs. The contract also involved replacing the existing central plant command center with the Motion Systems CPOCS to provide online monitoring of all plant mechanized equipment. This involves providing an operator graphical interface to the PLC network and other ancillary equipment. The CPOCS includes real-time conveyor and sorter emulation, CCTV monitors depicting live video and voice annunciation of all events on the mail facility floor.
Motion Systems� CPOCS command consoles include 20 monitors using Windows NT software. CPOCS will graphically display the smallest failures in the system and will prompt the console operators for corrective action. CPOCS is designed to allow the average mail flow controller, operations supervisor, maintenance technician and management personnel to view the plant equipment status and provide real-time statistical data.
